Przemysław Mazur, student at the Jagiellonian University Mathematics Institute, won the 17th International Mathematics Competition, which took place in Bulgaria.
329 students from 92 universities from Europe, Asia and the Americas participated in the mathematical struggles.
According to the Jagiellonian University website , Mazur took first place as the only contestant to solve nine problems, including the most difficult one, which only one other contestant managed to solve - Oleksandr Shamow from Kiev. Mazur repeated his success from two years ago, but this time without having to share first place with another competitor.
The university reminded that its student won his first international prize at mathematics competitions while still learning in high school. He is a triple gold medallist of international mathematics competitions in Slovenia (2006), Vietnam (2007) and Spain (2008).
The task of the International Mathematics Competition participants was to solve 10 problems, 5 in each day of the competition. For every problem they could receive 10 points. While the competition is individual, university teams were also unofficially ranked. Team score was based on the sum of the scores of three best students of the university, and the average score of all university representatives.
In an unofficial team classification the Jagiellonian University team took fifth place. Mathematicians from the University of Warsaw were 10th. First place was taken by Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University.
