Prof. Karol Grela, Prof. Jerzy Strzelczyk and Prof Andrzej Gałęski received Minister of Science and Higher Education awards for outstanding academic achievements.
Also honoured were the outstanding lecturers and authors of outstanding papers. "You are the greatest, the most responsible scientists who set the direction of development of Polish science and higher education, and set the highest standards for our younger colleagues" - Minister of Science Barbara Kudrycka congratulated the winners.
The award in the field of basic research received Prof. Karol Grela of the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences and the University of Warsaw, who is working on catalysts that enable the synthesis of new of organic chemicals. Representative of the award candidate evaluation team Prof. Wojciech Stec reminded that this year's Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded for achievements in this area. The laureates were Richard Heck from the U.S. and Ei-ichi Negishi and Akira Suzuki from Japan.
"Professor. Grela belongs to the youngest generation of professors, who managed to take its place in the international market" - said Stec. He added that Grela’s papers were cited by catalysts researchers, together with the papers of this year's Nobel Prize winners.
Prof. Jerzy Strzelczyk from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, an expert in the history of medieval Europe, received the award in the category of research for the development of society. Member of the award candidate evaluation team Prof. Tomasz Jasiński said that Strzelczyk previously received the so-called Polish Nobel Prize, an award of the Foundation for Polish Science, for one of his works, a two-volume book "Feather in fragile hands" on the literary works of women in the Middle Ages. In total, he added, Strzelczyk published about a thousand works, which are highly valued throughout Europe.
"But the professor’s greatest achievement is that many of this works are not only for academics, but is also for intellectuals, people of culture, people interested in history and cultural history. Prof. Strzelczyk has contributed greatly to the dissemination of elite culture and science in society" - said Jasiński.
The award for research for the development of the economy went to Prof. Andrzej Gałęski, physicist at the Centre for Molecular and Macromolecular Studies PAS. Justifying the award, Prof. Henryk Koroniak from the award candidate evaluation team said that Gałęski was awarded for his research "on developing new polymeric materials with unique plastic properties", which find applications in industry and agriculture. "He is a world renowned experts in this field" - he emphasised.
In addition, ten greatest academic teacher received the awards: Prof. Andrzej Barczak - an economist at the University of Economics in Katowice, Prof. Jan Boć - a lawyer at the University of Wrocław, Prof. Bogusław Dunaj - a linguist at the Jagiellonian University, Prof. Bogdan Galwas - an electronic at Warsaw University of Technology, Prof. Dorota Jamroz – a zootechnic at the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław, Prof. Stefania Ochmann-Staniszewska - a historian at the University of Wrocław, Prof. Marek Siemek - a philosopher at the University of Warsaw, Prof. Eugeniusz Świtoński - a physicist at the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Barbara Woynarowska - a physician and pedagogue at the University of Warsaw, and Prof. Wiktor Zipper - a physicist at the University of Silesia.
Also honoured were several meritorious university employees, authors of particularly interesting research papers and distinguished research teams.
