16 young researchers working abroad have received stipends under the "Homing Plus" programme of the Foundation for Polish Science.

The purpose of awarded financing is to encourage the scholars to return and pursue scientific careers in Poland.

Winners will receive personal stipends in the amount of PLN 5,000 per month and a research grant in the amount of up to PLN 80,000 per year. In total, they will receive over PLN 4.6 million for their research.

Highest grants among the winners - more than PLN 300 thousand - received six young scientists. Nearly PLN 330 thousand for research at the Warsaw University of Technology went to Dr Mariusz Zdrojek. Grants worth PLN 321 thousand were awarded to Dr Filip Murlak and Dr Adam Sikora. Dr Murlak will lead a research project at the University of Warsaw, Dr Sikora at the Technical University of Łódź.

Equally high grants - PLN 320 thousand each - received Dr Joanna Grzyb for her research at the Institute of Physics PAS and MD Mirosław Szczepański, who will conduct the work at the Medical University in Poznań.

Since foreigners may also participate in the programme, the winners include: Dr. Krishendu Ganguly, who will receive nearly PLN 300 thousand for his research at Marcel Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS, and MD Raphael Heurez, who will lead the research at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology. For this purpose he received PLN 316 thousand.

The objective of "Homing Plus" programme is to encourage young Polish scholars abroad to return to Poland. The programme is also open to young PhDs who are citizens of other countries but interested in spending a postdoctoral fellowship in Poland.

Programme participants should hold at least a doctorate and be in the early stage of their academic careers - up to 4 years after obtaining the doctorate. Candidates should also have been abroad for an uninterrupted period of at least 9 months (conducting research, on a postdoctoral fellowship, or preparing a doctoral dissertation).

Young researchers are evaluated on the basis of their scientific achievements in the past 4 years, the research project they intend to carry out during the grant period, and information about the team in which the project will be carried out.

The program implemented by the FNP is co-financed from EU structural funds under the Innovative Economy Operational Programme 2007–2013.

Applications to the second edition of the programme may be filed from 14 August to 15 October. Detailed information about the programme and entrance requirements are available at: http://www.fnp.org.pl/programmes/overview_of_programmes/grants_and_scholarships/homing_plus_programme
